Prenatal Yoga is one of those things…maybe your provider suggested you start, maybe you’ve had friends who have done it, but is it actually beneficial? And what exactly does it entail?
Well, let me tell you one thing for certain—prenatal yoga absolutely contributed to me having a smooth and empowering first birth. As a first-time mama, there were many moments during pregnancy when fear crept in. What is it going to feel like? Will I be able to handle it? What if something goes wrong?
My yoga practice taught me that all of these thoughts are just that—thoughts. They are the mind’s chatter, usually rooted in the future, not the present. Stress and anxiety live in the future. Groundedness and calm live in the present.
This is just one way yoga helped me navigate pregnancy and birth—and there are so many other benefits as well.
5 Benefits of Prenatal Yoga
Ease Aches and Pains
Let’s face it—pregnancy can take a toll on a woman’s body. Prenatal yoga helps stretch tight muscles, elongate the spine, and create space in areas that start to feel crowded. Gentle movement and mindful breathing can also relieve common discomforts like lower back pain, hip tightness, and swollen joints. By improving circulation and promoting relaxation, yoga helps the body release tension, making it easier to move through pregnancy with more ease and comfort.
Connection & Community
Connecting with other mamas in your local area who are on the same journey as you can be incredibly comforting. Finding a supportive community will carry you through both the best and most challenging days of motherhood.
Historically, we were meant to live in villages, where grandmothers, aunts, and cousins all came together to support the mother—especially during the early childhood years. With this support system largely lost in modern society, it’s more important than ever to cultivate meaningful connections through friendships.
Every prenatal yoga class begins with time to introduce, connect, and share. Many women form lasting friendships that continue long after pregnancy, creating a strong support system as they navigate motherhood together.
Learn How to Breathe
In prenatal yoga, we spend time learning how to properly breathe to aid in relaxation. We also practice using the breath to get us through intense physical postures. This is extremely useful in pregnancy and during birth!
Staying relaxed throughout pregnancy helps maintain a calm and nourished nervous system, which directly benefits your baby, keeping them relaxed and nurtured as well. Some effective relaxation techniques include box breathing, full diaphragmatic breathing, and alternate nostril breathing.
Other breathing practices, such as Ujjayi pranayama (also known as ocean breath), can help us navigate physical intensity. Keeping the breath smooth and steady, even in the face of strong sensations (hello, contractions!), allows us to move through the challenges of labor with greater ease and resilience.
Ease Fear by Learning to Stay Present
As I mentioned in my own experience, this was the number one benefit for me. Focusing on my breath during yoga keeps me grounded in the present moment. Carrying this practice into my daily life helps me shift out of my head and into my body.
Our body and breath are always present—they cannot exist in the past or future. Learning to focus on them keeps us rooted in the here and now, which can be incredibly helpful in easing irrational thoughts during pregnancy and birth.
Prepares the Body for Birth
During prenatal yoga, we focus on specific poses and practices that help prepare a woman’s body for labor and birth. Two key areas (among others) of focus are hip openers and pelvic floor exercises.
Hip openers help create space for the baby, ultimately allowing for a smoother passage through the birth canal.
Pelvic floor exercises train these muscles to both contract and release when needed. Many labors become stalled due to tight pelvic floor muscles, making relaxation just as important as strength. In prenatal yoga, we first develop awareness of this often-overlooked part of the body. From that awareness, we practice either strengthening or inviting more relaxation into these muscles, depending on what is needed.
As you can see, prenatal yoga offers a multitude of benefits. It’s not just a trendy exercise, and it’s not only for those who have practiced yoga prior to pregnancy.
